Here’s everything else. Posts I’ve written about small enablement tasks, new and upcoming technology or simply my opinion on one or the other development in the Anywhere Workspace universe.
Please note: Some of the posts are older than two years. Nature of our technology is constant development and innovation. I’m sadly not having enough time (and sometimes energy) to keep all blog posts 100% up to date. While it is my recommendation anyway to always take a look at the latest documentation, for these posts it is my strongest advice to check and review if things are still like they were at the time of publishing the blog post.

2022 – The Year of [offline] VDI?
Every once in a while I’m having a customer asking for use cases, which can only be covered by virtual machines running locally on the Desktop. Reasons usually are offline use or when the VM needs to be closely tied to the physical machine. Another main use case is: I want to provide (cheap) VMs for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) use cases or emergency cases, where employees need to make use of another device which is not their standard corporate PC but the environment is not allowing to run a VDI sourced out of the datacenter by e.g. VMware Horizon.
A first look at: Android 12
Already a couple of weeks ago, Google has released the first Developer Preview of Android 12. As usual, the new update from Google is expected for autumn this year. With an early release of the first pre-release version, Google primarily wants to give developers enough time to prepare their apps for the new release. Of course, this also applies to Unified Endpoint Management solutions such as Workspace ONE. The current version is not a beta and not “public” in the true sense of the word. Google is proceeding a little differently from Apple and is actually limiting to the developer circle in the first step, although this does not prevent anyone from installing the new release on their device – as long as it is a suitable Google device (the Pixel-Series, starting from the Pixel 3 – the Pixel 2 falls out this round).
Looking forward to 2021 – A small preview
2020 is behind us and many are hoping for a “better” or at least “more normal” 2021. It’s no different for me, although 2020 wasn’t all bad and the tech industry, especially the world of end-user computing, tends to benefit than suffered. Either way, there are a couple of reasons why 2021 will be another exciting year in the Workspace ONE World. In the following I will provide a little preview of some of the highlights that have already been announced and I expect to be driving innovation in 2021. We will see throughout the year how things develop and I will keep you updated within Blog posts and the Weekly Service Posts as soon as there are official announcements.
Reporting: The Workspace ONE Excel Add-In
In Workspace ONE, there are several options for accessing reporting information on devices, apps, profiles and general usage. Admins can create simple reports directly from Workspace ONE UEM. These reports are ready-made and cannot be adapted.
Workspace ONE – Techzone, KB, Docs – When do I use what?
Enterprise mobility and end user computing at Windows and macOS level are more dynamic than ever. There are monthly updates for the client apps, in the backend in the Workspace ONE UEM area, a new release is usually also made available every month. While the trend towards SaaS deployments has reduced the workload for backend updates for many customers, this does not apply to the fact that as an admin, engineer or architect you have to regularly find out about updates of the respective releases. This block post should help a little to better identify and use the classic contact points for information about Workspace ONE.
A First Look at: iOS15, iPadOS15 and macOS Monterey
It is no longer a surprise that Apple is presenting a number of new operating system versions at its in-house annual developer conference. It was no different this year, when a first official look at iOS15, iPadOS15 and macOS Monterey was granted. In addition, the systems for WatchOS and TVOS have also been taken to the next level, which won’t be a huge topic in this post. Even if some hoped, new hardware was not presented at the virtual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this year either. Apple is largely saving this for the fall of this year, when the new versions will then see the light of day in September.
VMware Workspace ONE – 2020 Year in Review
2020 was special and different in every way. While the trend towards innovation was not noticeably slowed down by the pandemic, new strategies for working from home or “not from the office” were to be developed from spring – “The New Normal”, as it is called everywhere. Many of the strategies that have been worked out will change work permanently even after the pandemic; a trend back towards increased business trips, especially for company-internal events, should be stopped for the time being.
VMware Boxer – Delegated, Shared and Multiple Managed Mailboxes
When you are one of the probably 99.9% of our customers looking to use the feature of Delegated, Shared or Multiple Managed (Secondary), there are good news. We’ve gone a long way, but we are finally there. With the latest Boxer release 5.23 for Android the last bit for Shared Mailboxes went GA. iOS had this feature already a month before with release 5.22.
Workspace ONE Device Management Modes
In conversations with my customers, I often find that the knowledge of how devices can be managed is not (or no longer) fully comprehensive. On the Workspace ONE side, a lot has changed here in recent years, or has been expanded and consolidated. Solutions such as the Workspace ONE Container or the Workspace ONE App have been merged into the Hub App. During the long journey, the following icons are probably still known, which have now all flowed into the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub:
What is the „Freestyle Orchestrator“?
If you look at the concept of how “things” are assigned to devices in Workspace One, you get the impression that not much has changed about this concept in recent years. The concept of smart groups or assignment groups has existed for many years and has proven itself as a “universal filter”. We leave out the forerunner “user groups” here.
